A Challenge to Antique Dealers

I call myself an antique dealer, loosely, apologetically.

Truthfully, most of what I try to sell falls in the "vintage" category. Not 100 years old. Yet at least 20 years old.

We are all trying to sell the same stuff, the same junk, the same. All across my city, Kansas City, there are hundreds of dealers. We are all competing for a very small piece of the pie. We run 30% off sales in our booth, only to have the dealer around the corner having a 50% off sale. Competition drives down prices. That's why Kansas City is probably the best city for finding vintage/antique items at the cheapest prices.

My point is, we've lost our creativity. When a dealer uses a different technique and comes up with a new twist on, let's say painting a dresser, then within the month, that technique is copied around our city at rapid pace, springing up in the West Bottom's famous First Friday Weekend sales. Each shop is offering the same stuff the shop around the corner offers.

I am talking to myself here - preaching at myself. Because I'm as guilty as anybody. In the quest for increased sales, we feel this is necessary.

I don't know how to solve this problem, except to do something different than others. But be assured, the "bubble will burst" when you are shortly thereafter copied, time and time again.

Part of the answer sounds harsh, but dealers who are hobbyists, who don't have the true need to make money for their household, are competing and adding to the pool of dealers. Consequently, we have to sell goods at lower prices.

Another answer is to NOT GIVE IN TO THE GREEDY DEMAND FOR CHEAPER GOODS! I mean, who really wants to fill up their house with $19 side tables? We've gotta face it - we wind up with lesser quality.

I had an antique dresser in my booth at River Market Antique Mall for 8 months. It's very old - unique dovetailing, and the woman who sold it to me said that it came through the wagon trains. No one would pay me $395 for it. Everyone wants an $89 dresser that has white paint on it. I was told to paint it to get it noticed. What did I do? I brought it home to keep for myself and hauled to the mall a painted antique, which I had in my entry but grew tired off - not the best quality but it will probably sell soon because it's not as expensive.

Yes, I'm ranting. And I value comments.

A Project using my Homemade Chalk Paint

Using homemade chalk paint, this is the project I painted. And I could kick myself for not getting a "before" shot of this piece. Let me describe the original: using regular paint, it would have needed sanding because there was a lot of gloss on the veneer. So...

I happened upon a blog at deannario.com called "It's Just Me" and saw her fabulous work. I emailed her and asked questions and she shared that she mixes plaster of paris with water and adds it to paint. More plaster or paris means more of a chalky appearance.

So, I had a can of light blue paint in a satin latex and put about 3/4 cup in a container. I added about 1/4 cup of a plaster/water solution. (I added enough water to the plaster of paris to make it like runny yogurt.)

That's all! I waited a day, then sanded it down before applying urethane to the top and paste wax to all the other parts. I'm happy with the results. I didn't pay much for this piece and it's so lightweight - I knew not to invest a lot of time in it with sanding and priming. It won't sell for a lot of money!

Mixing the chalk paint took less than 5 minutes. Love the results!

Making My Own Chalk Paint

I have been reading all over about people using the oh-so-expensive chalk paint. It's hard to find!

But from what I read, so EASY to make. And cheaper! No sanding or priming!

I have no pics because I haven't decided which piece to try it on.

You just use the paint of your choice, mixing it with Plaster of Paris. I've seen this on numerous blogs. ( I will post the links later on - I want to get permission.)

Let me know if your try it.
So...I think I'll try it on a frame first!

Pinterest and Blogging - Time for a Pinkie Match

Pinterest has been more interesting to me than blogging lately. Time to square off! I've neglected my "tiny blog". It's not that I don't like blogs; it's just that pinterest is so easy and I get more ideas. It's quick and I like that.

Dressing Table Sweetness

After beginning to paint this sweet dressing table, I realized I had failed, once again, to take a before shot. Let's just say it was dull, tired, and dinged.

Using ProClassics from Sherwin Williams in Roman Column, I painted away...then once the top was perfectly painted I took a dough scraper and scraped off the paint, revealing authentic crackling and imperfections. I love the look. The framed mirror is also finished in the same manner. Three coats of polyurethane topped it off nicely.

I moved this to my booth at River Market Antique Mall. Hope it sells this weekend!

Antique Booth Re-Vamp!

River Market Antique Mall, in the heart of Kansas City, has 4 stories of wonderful spaces full of antiques and vintage finds.

My booth is on the 3rd level, along the west wall. It's a large booth, so I took 3 old doors and attached brackets to the bottoms, fastening those brackets to the floor. I created a "wall" which divides my 8-by-16 foot space into 2 spaces.

Today I will add a beautiful dressing table, with attached mirror. I painted it and SO regret not taking "before" pics. It was old, dinged, and tired. Next post, I'll feature it, along with a little chest which I did take a "before" shot.

Notice the antique baby bathtub made of graniteware! I wanted to keep this and if it hasn't sold by Spring, it's coming home.

Vintage Jewelry Obsession

Vintage jewelry is addicting. I love this owl pendant; I embellished it with a bauble and added a jumpring. All of these pieces are on etsy.

Actually, I've gotten my vintage jewelry stash quite organized.

I am prepping for 2 shows this spring - the Fleeting Flea in Overland Park, Kansas, and Gypsy Chicks in Parkville, Missouri.

I plan on taking all sorts of vintage finds, my jewelry in particular.

Printers' Drawer Decor

Our family has two generations in the printing industry. My late father-in-law gave me these printers' blocks and the drawer years ago.

I remember having printers' drawers years ago and I, like everyone else, used it to display junk of all sorts.

Now, it has a place in our dining room, full of various fonts and sizes of blocks. How weird to think that this was the method for printing, and not that long ago. When I was Single-working-girl, I worked at a printing company and, yes, they "set type".

Goals for 2012 - Even Ones That Sound Silly

So what if the above picture has nothing to do with goals! I just loved it and found it on Tumblr.

Getting back to goals, I've written down goals for the past few years. While many goals go unmet, several are partially met. At least I'm striving to attain, even if the improvements are small.

One of my friends, who is Latino, made it a goal for 2011 to get more involved in the Latino community here in Kansas City. Specifically, she set a goal to find Latino friends.

One day, at a yard sale, she met a woman who was also Latino, they "hit it off" and became friends. Through this friend, she has since gotten involved with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and worked on fundraising projects for the group.

What's interesting is we had a discussion before 2011 started, regarding friendships and whether at our age - 50 - if it's possible to really, genuinely make new friends. I say "Why not?!" I shared with her that some of my current closest friends are friends I've only had for 5 years or less, but I feel as though they have been in my life for 5 decades. It's our spiritual connection - Jesus - that's really binds us.

So, yes, I believe in setting all sorts of goals. Even beyond the typical - lose weight, start running, get out of debt, etc....

Years ago, I had the privilege of hearing Meadowlark Lemon speak at a church. He used to the most famous of Harlem Globetrotters. They're an amazing group of athletes.

It's the time of year to reflect on the 2011, but more importantly to set goals for the 2012 and write them down. It's not that ALL of our goals will always come to pass, but if we write down our goals, there's a chance that some of them will come to pass.

I haven't been posting on my tiny-blog. Between life, etsy, Facebook and Pinterest, I am sort of divided.

I hope to show you some of what I've been doing. Like everyone, I've been making jewelry and painting furniture. While I maintain my space at River Market Antique Mall, I am exiting Good Company at the end of this month. I want to focus more on the mall, which is open full-time, and on etsy, which is paying off a little.

Also, I am going to get a part-time job after the holidays, that is, look for a part-time job. So...I need to focus on putting my time where there is the most potential, financially speaking.

But I'll still shop at Good Company on their sale weekends. I love Kelley and the girls! It's a terrific boutique!

Frugal Re-do for the Kitchen

How I love the new look I gave to my kitchen hardware! Sorry, but I forgot to take a "before" shot in my kitchen. So the picture below shows my laundry room counter, with the pulls before I painted them.

Don't you love the shiny brass!

I removed all pulls and hinges in my kitchen. Then using Rustoleum Primer (heavy duty) and Rustoleum Metallic Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint, I went to town. They look great, and I saved a lot of money. My concern is with the hinges. When I opened them, the paint scraped off a 1/4" section. So...black Sharpie to the rescue. We'll see how they hold up. I might have to go buy new hinges.

This was a 16-hour project. I am pleased with the results, though.

The Fall Facelift for Home

I've been busy with washing windows in these possibly-last-days of sunny and warm weather.

My living room was looking sad, so...I got out my sewing machine.

New drapes have given my living room a facelift.

I made them! Hobby Lobby: I LOVE YOU!!!

The rods I found at a garage sale - $1 for 5! Plus a huge sack of drapery rings.

After cleaning my windows, I decided it was time. The Pier 1 curtains had been up for 15 years.

And always painting furniture for sales, I never enjoy it in my own home, until now. I found this darling antique table at a yard sale, paying $10, which is a lot for me to pay for a table. But I love it!

I dressed up my boring crystal lamps. They went from this:

Yes, it's a different lamp, but both cute, but dull little crystal lamps. It just takes craft paint on the base. I dressed up this lamp with a vintage fiberglass shade.

What a quick transformation. And orange is my new favorite color.

Free, Like a Saint Bernard Puppy

From the curb during a neighborhood yard sale, I rescued four chairs - free. The owner even helped load them into my truck. They turned out to be as free as a Saint Bernard pup.

These pics above are the "after" shots. I must say, the finish is now terrific. I am happy with the outcome. But they were a lot of work, more than any chair I have re-done.

They required lots of sanding, which I do by hand. I went thru a lot of sandpaper! Then I painted using a semi-gloss paint. After a few days of curing, I sanded and distressed the finish, following up with Bri Wax in Light Brown.

Painting and finishing the wood frames was the easy part.

I used a double layer of burlap, which is inexpensive. However, the tedious process of finishing the backs was time-consuming. I went through 18 yards of Chinese braid.

While I like the finished product, I wouldn't attempt these again. Typically, people don't want to pay very much for chairs at local venues and I feel like I should get $80 to $90 each. We'll see what happens - they're at Good Company for this weekend's sale.

Here's the before picture - they were covered in a polyester fabric. They are solid chairs - Salem House Furniture pieces.

French Provincial Child's Chair

I found this darling French Provincial child's chair at Good Company. The bones are great - the fabric was shot! So...I mod-podged the fabric to keep it from tearing further, and covered it with burlap. Of course, the terrific legs must show!

Heywood Wakefield - Is It Wrong to Paint It?

Okay, I may have been impatient. But, this hutch top was abused by its previous owner - scratches, ink, water damage.

Nothing that a coat of paint can't solve, I thought. So I painted it with a gallon of "oops" paint from Lowe's. Then after distressing lightly, I used Briwax with a light brown tint.

I never think to take a "before" photo! But you can see what the design is like. I love it! It is now at Good Company in Merriam, setting on a harvest table. Kudos to Kelley, the owner, for recommending such a piece of furniture to anchor the space.

Breaking Up My Button Collection

My button collection is breaking up! And I will start selling it at The Fleeting Flea this weekend.

It's sorta painful, but just having buttons set in tubs in my little studio - pointless!

So...I have bagged and tagged over 160 packages of buttons. Some on cards, most not though. And it's only a drop in the bucket. There are many more buttons in my studio. I have sent emails to the Kansas Button Society and Missouri Button Society chapters. I'm trying to get the word out because there are others who love buttons as much as me.

Chair Re-Do

After paying $10 for this chair at a garage sale, I decided to strip off the red plaid fabric. Beneath was the original fabric - very drab. So, I reached for the Sherwin Williams Pro Classics paint and changed the looks. With a tad of sanding, I distressed it and finished the look with Johnson Paste Wax.

The decision to leave the front of the chair back loose and blousey may haunt me! It's going to Good Company in Merriam for this weekend's sale. Wish me luck!

Antique Booth at River Market

It was time...

I sort of neglected my space at River Market Antique Mall for a few weeks. Traveling, prepping a kid for college, etc...just...life!

I added these 2 mid-century end tables. They are $90 for the pair at River Market. The fainting couch has never sold and I don't want to bring it home. It's standing on it's end to make room for other stuff.

Check out my etsy and ebay sales. I sold a couple of nice pieces of jewelry on etsy last week. One item sold within 10 minutes of posting at 10:00 in the evening!

Now, it's weekend time...I skip yard sales most Saturdays. I would rather hang around home if the family is here. If everyone's gone, I go junkin'. But not today. However yesterday I hit some sales and brought home a full truck. I got a set of 4 chairs free; they were on the curb and the owner came out and helped me load them. Now there's generosity! The material is not great, so I'll paint the wood and re-cover. Pictures will follow! And I'm still working on other projects for Good Company and The Fleeting Flea.

A Very Slow Kitchen Transformation

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to plop down $25K and transform a kitchen at once? For most of us, it the changes happen in small increments. Like new kitchen chairs, which I scored at Good Juju this weekend for just $97.50 for all four. Yes, that's right! There were some stains, most of which I was able to remove with my little green machine. But overall, they're great and what I've been dreaming of. Besides, we'll add stains to them ourselves!

Guess Where I've Been

Yes, I've been gone awhile. I went on a trip to San Francisco. We spent most of our time downtown - just a little at the Wharf. My husband had a salesforce.com conference. So I tagged along.

Riding the cable cars is a treat. We don't have those in Kansas City. We had a wonderful dinner at Trattoria Contadina. One dinner was barside at Jillian's, sharing a couple of appetizers. And the trip wouldn't be complete without a meal at Boudoin's. Gotta have that sourdough bread!

On past trips, I've toured Alcatraz and taken a ferry to Sausolito. Muir Woods is a wonderful trip and I hope to go there on the next trip. Coit Tower is great to see and tour. If you are there on a Saturday, they have a wonderful market in the morning at the Ferry Building on the Wharf.

Around the corner from our hotel was Glide Methodist Church. They are famous for their care of the homeless. I would love to attend a Sunday service sometime. I heard of it first when Maya Angelou was talking about it. The homeless ministry was featured in a movie starring Will Smith, in which he and his son stayed there.

There is so much to see in San Francisco. And I needed to buy a fleece while there; on the same day I bought the fleece, it was 100 degrees here at home!

Today I visited the West Bottoms - Liberty Belle and Good Juju. I will show you my treasures soon. Long story short - I am rearring my kitchen eating area with an unused antique oak table and some Good Juju chairs. Can't wait to share!

No Safe Beige Here

Why do we always play it safe with our homes? Shouldn't we aim for different designs from our neighbors? Model homes?
If you plan on selling your home in the near future, you're told to neutralize. I get that. I have been angling toward selling my home for a few years now, even though it was only on the market a portion of that time. And it's not on the market now. But I play it safe. Beige walls. Nothing too "out there".

It's kind of like our lives. We play it safe...don't speak up...don't rock the boat...don't get involved...

My beige life. I want a vibrant and colorful life. Now, there's a goal.

Mid-Century Flow

It's all about the flow - you know - getting in the flow of what's hot. What people want.

Mid-century is hot, so this starburst clock by Rycoco, battery-operated, is in my booth at River Market Antique Mall - currently 20% off of the $99 price tag. I think it will sell soon. Notice that cool lamp above it! River Market is full of mid-century, primitive and industrial finds.

While they will be closed - just this once - Tuesday through Thursday for a facelift at the front of the store, they will re-open Friday for a 10%-off-storewide-sale. Everything!

Wallflower Chair Makeover

It's amazing what sandpaper, paint, wax and burlap can do! This chair is shown in the photo below. See the green chair. Yep, that's it. It's now gracing the presence of Good Company in Merriam, just in time for the weekend sale.

No one paid attention to it before - I had it in the Gypsy Flea Market and it was the wallflower of the sale. Now...let's see if anyone falls in love with it!

Junk for Sale All Over the Place

Isn't this a great velvet chair - it swivels and is only $50 at River Market Antique Mall.

Hurricane lamps aren't that special, but this antique lamp has a four-faced base. How cool is that! I listed it on ebay for $199.

Crown Trifari made this vintage plastic bracelet and it's in my etsy shop - anniemason.etsy.com

Ditto with these earrings - sterling with rhinestones. They are among several pieces of jewelry in my etsy shop.

The bones of this chair are great. It was recovered in a red check, not bad, and probably should've just sold it that way! The original fabric underneath is boring. I have painted the wood and will recover it soon.

Good Company is full of fun stuff and I share a space with two girlfriends. It's a 2-weekend-a-month venue.

That's what I worked on last week. I have more projects and will take you along!

A Most Fascinating Person in Our Day

Not many people fascinate me. I learned of one fascinating person this week - Mama Maggie Gobran.

Mama Maggie is an Egyptian and the founder of Stephen's Children. Caring for the poorest of the poor who dwell in the garbage dumps of Cairo, her heart is for the children. She has mobilized volunteers and staff and resources from around the world to provide mercy works for the impoverished - food, medical, clothing.

I'm a youngish-middle-aged woman who has tried to be an antique dealer for over 10 years. During this time I've sold a few thousand items, and bought thousands more. I really enjoy it.

The problem is - I have too much junk. I buy much more than I sell. It has permeated my home, filling a bay in my garage, my craft room/office, and my basement. Even though I've made some money, I'm not making enough. And...even though I have inventory to draw from, I feel the need to constantly go out and buy more, you know, keep up with the trends in junking. (Oxymoron, I know.)

Sometimes, I feel like getting rid of all the junk and getting a "real" job, where I don't stay up til midnight preparing ebay shipments, stripping 10-year old fabric off of a chair,

and moving junk to the basement, while packing up another load of junk.

Marie Antoinette's Farm

When a Dealer is Glad for Missed Sales

When is a dealer glad for missed sales?...Glad when an item doesn't sale?...Glad to be hanging onto a piece of inventory?

Answer: When the hanging wicker chair and stand from the 70's are found at Pier One Imports, as a repro, for $500!

I have held onto my hanging chair and stand, after no one paid me $59 for the set at Liberty Belle. Now I am so thankful that I didn't sell it there. It might get moved to River Market Antique Mall, where I can command a bigger price, but I've grown attached to it on my screened porch.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there are great bargains to be had at the first Friday weekend sales in the KC West Bottoms. I will be shopping there in a couple of weeks. Never know what you'll find!

Irish Rock Band Love

Saint Louis, Missouri hosted the band U2 on Sunday night. We drove from one side of our state to the other and loved every minute of this concert. I only snapped a few pics because I like to savor the moment without having to worry about getting a "good shot".

After leaving Saint Louis, we headed southeast and have wound up in Nashville. Though I'm not a country music fan, we are going to the Grand Ole Opry. When in Rome...

Yes, I junked along the way and will show you what I've found. I'm so excited! A vintage starburst clock for a few bucks! Maybe it will pay for my concert ticket.

If You Want Different Results...

Do you have to do things differently?

I'm speaking of my junking business.

I am selling in two locales, currently - Good Company and River Market Antique Mall.

I closed my space at Liberty Belle; the set-up times are very structured and don't allow me to be flexible with other aspects of my life. So, for a couple of months in which I'd like to travel, I've stepped out. I'll miss the dealers at Belle. Here's a shot of Heather and Ellen's space - The Red Swing.

I'd like to sell a better class of junk than what I have been trying to sell. Dealers like Heather and Ellen and Dale spur me on to better things; to step up my game. So...should I stop relying on yard sales for most of my inventory? I think I need to focus on specific categories of goods rather than buying a broad array of stuff.

Sure, I couldn't resist that alligator head I found yesterday. And the "man" tins I found will help me pay my rent. But that's so short-sighted.

Above is a picture of us girls, our group, serving at the Convoy of Hope here in KC last month.

Last year, we decided to stop sitting around talking about what Jesus and his disciples did.

We now serve a monthly dinner at at women's and children's shelter in the city.
We also sponsor an apartment for a ministry that gets homeless people back on their feet.

I can't wait to see what God is gonna do this year.

Junker or Hoarder?

After perusing these wonderful craigslist ads for more junk/inventory, I'm questioning whether I'm a dealer or hoarder. I have a hard time passing up garage sales.

All these ads are eye candy to me. I particularly love the white vanity, even though vanities are hard to sell.

I justify my junk as "inventory" and keep telling myself to buy only small pieces of furniture that I can move by myself, for obvious reasons. I can just look and dream.

I don't think I'm a hoarder...not even a collector. Just a junker who sells.

Of course, Independence Day is just around the corner. I don't mean to offend anyone in another country with the display of the US flag. (I believe I lost a follower due to this in a previous post.)

I greatly admire and respect all those who have fought in our Armed Forces and many have given their lives in service. I am not ashamed of my country's flag. It represents so much for so many...Thanks to all who served and are now serving.

Just yesterday I attended the funeral of a young soldier who died in combat. I'm deeply moved by his sacrifice and his family's sacrifice. No words suffice.

I've always said that the best part of the junking world is the people and this weekend proved that to be true again.

Yard Sale Finds

I love the doll head on the left - she has teeth!

Love old frames. And I can't pass up quirky holiday decor!

Old hymnals are a favorite of mine. This thermometer has a native American chief and says "Kansas City MO" - some sort of advertisement. This one I'll keep. And the toy wooden tops - I've never run across one before. Before I could get the other 2, a man walked up and grabbed them up!

Books, buttons, checkers and burlap...Oh the joy! Wait a minute - I wonder if that book, "In the Desert of Waiting" is the exact same copy I sold a few years ago. Very odd to find a 100-year-old book that's identical.

Aren't these Siestaware mugs great?! And I got a stash of vintage doll clothes, complete with stilettos!

No self-respecting Kansas City Chiefs fan would pass up this set of vintage stadium seats. Hubby will be proud!

A Wishbone's Purpose

Wishbones serve a wonderful purpose in these crocheted thimble holders I own. They are my favorite pieces I collect. The first one pictured is large. The 2 smaller ones are darling, as well. I thought I'd share more of what's in my display case collection.

I peruse antique and vintage stores often. I never see this kind of thimble holder.

If I crocheted I'd make one, but I only know how to crochet a chain.

A Beautiful Wedding

A young lady, very special to our family, was married this weekend. The wedding took place at her family home on acreage in the country and we helped all weekend with setting up and tearing down. Thus, no blogging.

My three favorite things about the wedding, other than the couple, of course:

#1 The Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head cake toppers, complete with the bride's chocolate lab.

#2 The sparklers the couple walked through before they left the reception for their honeymoon.

#3 The set of twins who were flower girls - they were darling and their Grandma bought them the "real" tiaras for Christmas to wear in the wedding. Aren't they adorable.

Congratulations, Ashley and Tyler. We love you and enjoyed celebrating with you!

If your're in the Kansas City area, stop by Good Company. It's located in Merrian, Kansas. I am a vendor and love this boutique. Truly a hip little place, and not all that little! There are fabulous finds. (It's located 1 block north of I-35 and Lamar.)

Next week I am participating in the Gypsy Chicks sale in Parkville. My friend, Tracy, has an incredible farm and we will be having the sale in her barn. ReDeux is one of the other vendors. So excited to see Stephen and Dale there! It will be Friday and Saturday 8-4. More info will follow.

More Sewing Notions

Only a couple of sewing needle folders have made it into my collection. The first one I've pictured is old. I don't know about the second folder - it almost looks too perfect! But it could be the real deal.

I love stitchery, even though I don't make time for it anymore. I have cross-stitched for years, and I love quilts. I made my oldest son's quilt - Grandmother's Flower Garden - all by hand. I know I made tons of mistakes and it took me an embarassing amount of years to complete. I started my daughter's quilt 20 years ago. I won't say where it stands in process. My youngest son - well, I have the material and pattern.

I guess you could say, I love the "idea" of quilting.

But...when I found 6 (only 3 pictured) with the original red leather seats I couldn't resist. I got them at a great price. Don't you love the studs!

I use both, actually. But these hankies I'm showing you are my special ones - not to be used.

The first three were stitched for an older woman by a relative in Ireland. They were a wedding gift; note the wedding bells on the first one. The other hankies have beautiful cutwork and crocheted edges.

More Little Pretties

Needle cases and a sterling silver thimble are part of my collection in my display case. While neither has a lot of value, I love them still.

Also, there is this wonderful pink sachet holder (at least that's what I use it for) and it has this bright green ribbon running through the bottom and also used as bows.

From a dear friend, I bought this Victorian-era purse. It has drawstrings. I don't know the name for the style of lace. It has tassles attached to the ends of the cords.

Will I ever part with these pretties? Probably not....

People assume that dealers of vintage junk and antiques are hoarders.

On the contrary.

I keep my home rather sparsely decorated.

One of my few collections is contained in a display case. This case, which my Dad made just because he was bored, houses my collection of vintage sewing notions, hankies, and diaper pins.

I lined the back with some silk toile from Japan. The bag I am showing you is very old. This darling handmade bag says "buttons" along the side. Hand embroidery adorns it and I love the nose on this critter! It's a sewing hook! It has buttons it that someone collected.

Each day I'll show you a little more of the collection in this case.

Frog on a Bench

Sitting on the red bench on my front porch is a cement frog. He is the kind of frog that holds a housekey, but I've forgone such an invitation to intruders...

I love flowers in the summer. I find it's hard to keep them alive and lively when I'm out of town, even though there is someone at my home to water them. I must water more than others.

Twig furniture is awesome, but more for looks. While this chair, which I received many years ago for a birthday gift, is usable, it's not comfy. I went to Pier 1 Imports for the cushion. I love Pier 1 - it's like Anthropologie without the expensive prices and clothing. The staging is not as good - but the inventory is great. And they don't have the variety of Anthropologie.

I must go - time to water my flowers...

Beach Toes

Beach vacations rank among my favorite things...playing in the water, reading, drinking mojitos...

I finished The Queen's Fool by Philippa Gregory. I have read several of her books in this series - The Constant Princess, The Boleyn Inheritance, The Other Boleyn Girl, to name a few.

I read The Shack. So many people I know have read it and most love it. Some hate it. I found it monotonous. Must've been my mood. When I say some of my friends love it, they felt it was life-changing. I don't get it. I have a view of God that is pretty big and I know He is beyond my imagination, so maybe this is why I found the book dull.

I also read The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. It's one of very few self-help books I've read. I was intrigued by her quest, as a happy-person, to become happier. It really seems as though she just gained more self-discipline in the main areas of her life. But it gave me some great ideas in approaching, methodically, my goals and prioritizing them.

The purpose of our beach vaca was to celebrate my 50th birthday there! What a celebration, to relax with my family and get away from it all...now I'm off to junkin'! Adios!

Change is in the air...

Last week, I moved into the River Market Antique Mall in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. I have been on the wait-list for quite some time. This is one of the best and best-known antique malls in the midwest. I am on the 3rd floor and am thrilled. It is an awesome space against a brick wall, half painted white.

I am setting up this week for the Liberty Belle sale. And I'll be vacating Nellie & Nico's. All in a week's work!

Last weekend, I found this antique fainting couch - gold velvet! I have some just-purchased items and some stuff I've had a while. Try and look for the bookcase - it was reddish-plum on the last post but is now a clean cream color.

Now I'm off to find new hardware for the dresser which is now cream, because I can only find 7 of the original 8 pulls. Don't you hate it when that happens...

No one will share their secrets...

on their painting techniques for furniture. I have casually conversed with many vendors who routinely paint furniture; I can't say many have told me what paint they use. Art and Genevra from Parkville Antique Mall told me several years ago that they used inexpensive satin paint from Walmart. I truly cannot remember any other vendors giving up their painting secrets. And when customers come into the shops and sales and ask what the technique is used and what paint is used, they are met with tight lips. This has offended many vendors.

I greatly respect missmustardseed.blogspot.com for sharing oodles of techniques on painiting and reupholstery and whatever else she might be working on. This is a very generous gesture and "she who waters will herself be watered".

I have purchased paint (for furniture) from Walmart and Lowes and am rarely pleased with the results. To really go on the cheap, I have bought many cans of "oops" paint.

I compare my finish to other dealers and am embarassed when they see my finished work. And some of the paint has remained tacky months after being applied.

So I splurged and went to Sherwin Williams and bought Pro Classics water-based enamel in Roman Column. I wanted a nice, light cream and want to settle on one cream for a lot of pieces. I started priming and remembered to photograph my projects. The acutal paint will follow when I get time, probably a couple of days. I will update with the results and hope that I will feel proud and not embarassed of my painting.

I was disappointed at the current issue of my fav "Country..." magazine. All furniture on the cover was painted.

Can we not leave alone the beautiful patina of stained and beautiful walnut and oak?

Imagine how different the following pictures would look if all the furniture had been painted.

The biggest dilemna I have, as an antique/vintage/home decor dealer is whether or not to paint good wooden furniture. Beautiful 100 and 200 year old buffets of walnut and other woods are being slapped with coats of paint and distressed because that's what sells. I am guilty of this! No judging here.

I would so love to get over this era of painting all furniture.

Sleek wood furnishings are beautiful. And eclectic mixes are so interesting. Modern is great. Some country is great. All is great...in moderation.

The Plight of the Antique Dealer

With the purchase of this fountain, I had a reality check. It is way too heavy to haul around. My smart husband suggests I sell it on craigslist. I think he's right.

I didn't pay a lot for it; my zeal got the best of me!

I've been absent from blogland, scarcely checking my bloglist, let alone posting. This is the start of the busy season for me. Because I live in the Midwest, we have warm weather from only spring through fall. As a result, garage sales are only spring through fall.

While some antique dealers around here buy year round from auctions and estate sales, only a few of us will admit the truth: we buy our inventory from garage sales.

That being said, I've been busy with junking. And now that I'm in 3 locations for selling my wares, I feel scattered. Plus, next week is the Fleeting Flea in Overland Park, Kansas. It's a 2-day show and I will blog about this on Monday. If you live here, and even if you don't, this will be an awesome event. My friend Antonia Roper from The Beehive, a soul sister, will be sharing a space with me.

In this business, there's got to be a way to "pay" myself on a semi-regular basis. I haven't figured out how to actually make a living with this. There's a balance and I have yet to find it. I would appreciate comments. I do take my business seriously, as does Uncle Sam. I become slightly irritated when people say, "well, Diane, it's a nice hobby for you...as long as you break even..."

I don't expect Target or Walmart or the dentist to break even. Why should I when I spend a lot of time each month buying, fixing, painting, tagging, researching, and hauling?! Thus the plight of the antique dealer...

Good Company - the new digs

Trying to Find the Right Fit

Always trying to find the right fit for selling wares, my girlfriend Antonia and I are going to become vendors at Good Company in Merriam, Kansas.

Good Company is a darling boutique which is open for selling the 1st and 3rd weekends of every month. It is beautiful and girly and not-as-rough-looking as the venues in the West Bottoms, which I love also. What's fun is the atmosphere. Old records are playing on the record player! It's only been open 6 months and I feel lucky that we are getting the chance to sell there!

Unique to this shop is that they host a dinner party the 3rd Friday night of each month. It looks like a smashing success.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Kansas City has an enormous St. Patrick's Day parade starting soon. Even though I haven't been in years, I'm still proud of my city for hosting such a large parade.

Pictured above is my favorite linen tea towel, made in Ireland. It hangs in my kitchen every year leading up to March 17th. I love the images and color.

Saint Patrick took the message of Jesus Christ to Ireland. With all the hoopla, I still remind myself what this means to us.

Paintings...

I bought this painting from a dealer at Bottoms Up last weekend. He is on the east side of the 2nd floor in the middle and I think it was a steal at $29 frame and all. It's an original oil and I don't see me ever parting with it. I love pastoral scenes with a building, and of course, original paintings. The artist is Lena Lloyd. I suppose an amateur artist but possibly more.

This painting gets tons of compliments. Everyone loves it. I got it for $45 at an auction a few years ago. I love the aging of the canvas. There is no visible signature.

These paintings, each with other paintings by H.E. Broome, hang in my hallway.

Many things that I buy, I will part with by selling them in my booths, wherever I may be renting space. I am quite unattached to any "thing" except these paintings.

Speaking of being an antique dealer, I am re-thinking my business. The reality of it is that there is no predictablility in regards to income. This is a slow time of year, I know that, and will remain slow until April 15th, tax day. I am thinking of becoming a picker - buying for a select number of dealers - and not selling in a retail fashion. I see it as an either-or proposition. Can't be both. Perhaps I'm wrong...

A Cabinet Makeover

Several years ago, I bought this cabinet on the town square in Liberty, Missouri. I can't remember the name of the shop - it's no longer there, destroyed by a tornado a few years ago. With the idea in mind of holding all my dolls and such from my childhood, it sat, doors closed, in a corner of my kitchen.

At Christmas, I took out all my dolls and toys and put the Snow Village in it. It looked great!

Now that spring is arriving, I decided to leave the doors open and put all of my odds-and-ends of white dishes, along with this beautiful set of Victoria Bone China dishes. I was told the large pot/bowl is a chocolate pot. I don't know anything about it. I just know I love the dainty flowers on it.

I hope to add more odds-and-ends of white dishes this garage-sale-season.

Shake off Winter with Redecorating

Everything about this room is beautiful. The bursts of color balance the gray-blue. (House Beautiful)

Once again, neutral color palettes are so much better with the bright burst of color. I love everything about this room.

Love this fabulous pendant light fixture with turquoise beads. How could I make this? Hmm...Let's think...a light kit with chain, 3 metal rings - 2 small and 1 large, then tons of turquoise beads on strings. I will be going to the hardware store soon and Hobby Lobby for the beads. I'm probably crazy, but I've got to try it. I'll keep you posted.

Craigslist Postings

After returning from a cruise yesterday, I am hitting the ground running today. Liberty Belle is happening this weekend and I'm going to go there and shop shop shop!

Perusing craigslist this morning, I found a few things that I'd like to share. The ad that caught my eye is a trade for a house about 90 minutes from where I live - an old fixer - they would trade for house a close-by or a good truck! The intriguing part is that the antiques come with the house! My dream - getting a house full of old junk!

Here are some other craigslist ads that I like, getting me in the mood for yard-sale-season.

This antique Hotpoint Stove is $350.

This chest is $250, more than I would pay, but I think it's pretty.

This antique wardrobe is $500, not a bad price but not a wonderful deal.

This antique hutch is $275. A decent price and quite nice.

Next Friday, I will leave the house bright-and-early, cash in my grubby little hand and look for yard sales. I can't express how excited I am!

Everyone is grumbling in my city because we have another round of snow here. Just a week ago today, we had sunshine and 70 degrees! Whew!

So, I consulted the "House at Pooh Corner". In the first chapter, Pooh writes a song:

Pooh added "tiddely pom" to make it sound more hummy. So fitting for the weather.

Besides the wonderful writing, I love this vintage edition of this book! It was reprinted in 1961 and has wonderful black-and-white illustrations throughout.

Union Jack Table

This antique table has an awesome base, but I had it in 6 sales at Liberty Belle and no one fell in love with it, so I decided I needed to paint it. I saw the Union Jack painted on furniture on missmustardseed.blogspot.com and decided it would be perfect.

Taping off and getting the design correct were the toughest part.

The finished product! (Yes, I laid it across my kitchen table and worked on it.)

I distressed it a bit. I couldn't find the glaze I wanted, so I used brown shoe polish. Then, using wipe-on polyurethane, I sealed it.

When I return it to Liberty Belle for the next sale, I'll post a picture of it, base and all.

Mid-century Stiffel floor lamp $150

Waterfall buffet $250, which I've seen painted and distressed for a fabulous look.

This 70's dresser and mirror for $110, which is sort of high. I would pay $40 and paint it the color of the garage door behind it!

This dresser/desk is awesome for $35. I would love to make a trip across town right now to get it!

I would love to go get this dressing table, also. $25.

There's something about long tables we all love, like this 9 foot table with metal legs for $250.

This antique wardrobe is sort of pricey at $800, but I like it.

Cowboys of Past

One of my favorite pictures is of my Grandfather, Willard Mason. He was born in 1889.

As a child of 9 years old, he went to work full time in coal mines because his father died in the mines.

Grandpa had 9 children. He was quite the entrepreneur, owning several businesses in his small Missouri town. A coal mine, a restaurant, a barbershop...

This picture was taken before he got married at age 20. Do the math - before 1909! He and a friend donned their best clothes for the shoot. I believe he worked in Colorado awhile as a single man. This photo may have been taken there. Don't you love it!

Memories of 3rd Grade Valentine's Cards

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! I hope it's a wonderful day, whether you have a love interest in your life, real or imagined!

I was remembering 3rd grade at my elementary school. Of course, we all decorated a shoebox the night before at home and cut a slot in the top for our Valentine's we were to receive at school the next day.

We were so so careful as to sending the right valentines to the right people. Didn't want to send any mixed messages...

What a surprise I got the next day when the cutest boy in my 3rd grade class signed his valentine "Love" followed by his name. I was petrified. Showing my friends, we all compared his cards to theirs. None of them said "Love" before his name.

That was the sum total of any hint of affection from this boy. Very short-lived but I still remember it!

Can't believe I didn't save this card, the junker I am.

Liberty Belle this weekend!

If you live in the Kansas City area, don't forget that this is the first-Friday weekend in the West Bottoms.

At Liberty Belle, we are having lots of vintage clothing for sale this month, complete with models!

There are also 2 other vintage venues this weekend by us - Good Juju and Bottoms Up Antiques.

I will take a picture of the location for you who don't live around here - you won't believe the part of town that these markets are. Originally the stockyards of this beautiful "cowtown", this previously-blighted area is now booming with businesses - studios, lofts, eateries, antique venues and all sorts of businesses. Actually there is a lot of history and Kansas City had an important role in the settlement of the western US. Okay, history lesson over!

My New Digs

Welcome to my new digs - Nellie & Nico's. It's in a suburb of Kansas City - Shawnee, Kansas.

It's set up like a traditional antique mall/flea market. Opening day should be this Tuesday, February 1st.

All spaces are only 4' x 8'. There is a large furniture section for consignment. My girlfriend, Cristie of cristieslittlebirdies.blogspot.com is across the aisle from me. I'll post pics of her space next time.

I lined the walls with a brown burlap and burlap coffee bags to cover the brown pegboard.

I'm so excited to have a 2nd venue for selling my wares. Let's see how it goes!

Unfinished Business

Unfinished business sits in a basket that hangs around the house. Sometimes this basket is moved to another location in the home. Often, it makes a really handy footstool.

Opening the lid, I find a handful of projects in progress, from years ago. It's not that I don't enjoy the cross-stitching or hand-appliquing on the 12th in a series of 12 quilt blocks. (Yes, I'm done with the other 11 blocks! So close, and yet so far.)

I think I'll work a little each day on these projects until they are done. After all, the joy is in the journey, not just the finished project.

A few years ago, I bought this lamp at a yard sale for $3. The color suited a girl's room. It had been spray-painted, hiding the gold paint beneath. I'd had it for sale in my booths for awhile, then brought it home.

Last week, I decided to use it, giving it a new look with gold spray paint, the kind that looks "textured", however there is no texture to the paint. I love the outcome! I plopped on a shade that I had in my stash. (Who else besides a junker/dealer would have a stash of lamp shades, or spare lamps, for that matter?)

Here's the end result. Whad'ya think?

Birdies in my window

Birdies in my window remind me of impending Spring.

Seems as though winter can drag on after New Year's day; reminders of birds and flowers help to endure the cold and snow.

The last photo has the lil' container with a parrot - a gift from my soul sister, Cristie, at cristieslittlebirdies.blogspot.com, her new blog.

Actually, I purchased the rest of the bird figurines for re-sale. However, like anything else I purchase, I have to decide if my pleasure from keeping them will outweigh the loss of the sale. In this case, you see who won - the birdies in the window.

Living in the moment

Looking at my dogs, I'm reminded of what Cesar the Dog Whisperer said on his show.

"Dogs live in the present."

They are just a small part of creation, and they don't worry about the future.

I would like to live in the present, forgetting the past, and not worry about the future.

How much happier would we all be if we learned to be grateful and live in the moment?

That's not to say we shouldn't give the future some thought and planning and goal-setting. If we follow what God says, we will write down our goals. (Habakkuk chapter 2).

So as I am snowed in with my dogs, cozy on their beds, I will put pen to paper and write out goals for 2011.

I will keep watch to see what He will speak to me.

January at Liberty Belle

January blahs, go away! Liberty Belle is open this weekend!

What a wonderful shop with unique finds and home decor that is right in the downtown of Kansas City's west bottoms. The west bottoms of KC is home to the stockyards and Kemper Arena, which hosts the American Royal Rodeo in the fall for several weeks. The barbeque contest is one of the largest in the nation. For years, the only other events in the bottoms were the haunted houses.

Thankfully, a few people with ambition and vision have given the area a shot-in-the-arm with venues like Liberty Belle. New business are popping up all the time and loft-living is also popular here. Join in the fun!

As much as I adore the magazine by the same name, my humble abode is a far cry from the studios of others. Situated in the corner of our basement, I am in heaven as I surround myself with my treasures and enjoy solitude.

Occasionally, it gets a good cleaning and looks tidy, only to have me bring home a trunk full of yard sale goodies.

There is no fancy ceiling or wood floor - it's concrete and bare rafters, oh, and I have to have a space cleared to access the electrical box in case we ever blow a fuse!

This is where this woman creates, and loves every minute of it!

My first project of 2011

This hideous record player stand is my first project piece of the year.

Using a brownish-black paint, Valspar Fired Earth, I painted this piece after taking it all apart, then used a gloss polyurethane on it. I think it would be a great TV stand.

This piece will be in my booth at Liberty Belle next weekend. I'll share some other photos this week.

Easy Bake Love

This is my Easy Bake Oven which I've had for over 40 years; probably closer to 45 years. The original light bulb still works; this is what bakes the goodies.

As you can see, I baked two cookies in it during my baking marathon.

I'm so glad my Mom saved this treasure!

All this decorating we do this time of year - it doesn't seem right to take it down in a few days, does it?

I might leave my Christmas decor in my home a bit longer than usual, some of it, that is.

Who says it needs to be removed on New Year's day?! I think joyous, positive elements spread throughout the home are meant to be enjoyed longer than just a few weeks.

More Christmas decorations

While I get bored with my own Christmas decorations, I love to see other people's decorations.

This cabinet housed all my childhood toys until recently. I bought it for that purpose. It's made of repurposed lumber. When people would comment on it, I would open it and say, "Here is my childhood!"

I am using it for the Snow Village collection. On top is a garland with lights. I added some of my dried honeysuckle vine from the back yard.

After Christmas, I will leave my childhood memories packed away and fill it with my collection of ironstone dishes! Pics will follow...

Seeing Red...

Finding the right shade of red for our front door and shutters has been a little tough. I didn't want a pinkish hue or a fire-engine red.

My aim was more of a bittersweet red. I am happy with the results. It feels wonderful to have our home freshly painted.
